Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onions and garlic, and sauté until soft.
Add the chopped tomatoes, sugar, salt, and pepper. Cook for a few minutes until the tomatoes are soft.
Add the vegetable stock and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes.
Use an immersion blender to blend the soup until smooth.
Serve hot, garnished with fresh basil leaves.
