A festive Dutch New Year’s treat, these vegan oliebollen are deep-fried dough balls, light and fluffy on the inside, and can be filled with raisins or apple pieces for extra sweetness.
Method
Tested in our kitchen
Dissolve yeast in warm plant-based milk.
In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt.
Add the yeast mixture to the flour and mix until a sticky dough forms.
Fold in chopped apple and raisins if using.
Cover and allow to rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
Drop spoonfuls of the dough into the hot oil. Fry until golden brown.
Drain on paper towels and dust with powdered sugar before serving.
