During the 2025 edition of Touch-a-Truck, KFD equipment were joined by the Lihue Airport Rescue and Fire Department in teaching families about equipment and safety.
The event also featured free activities and community resources, including from Head Start Schools, and numerous services offered by Child and Family Service, including the Hawaii Foodbank Kauai. Everything was set up in the open field where Grove Farm hosts its weekly farmers market, and provided lots of parking for the surge of families attending. A bank of Fun and Kwazy Rides, a scale-able wall, and numerous bounce houses built up appetites for the caravan of food trucks, where Shaka Burgers were sold down to just vegetarian options with two hours remaining.
“I was helping with the food,” said Dave Hinazumi of Grove Farm, a community partner. “We were OK until they started serving the food. m. m. at the Lydgate Beach Park large pavilion located across from the lifeguard tower. “This event is intended to bring together community resources, services and support for Kauai families, with a special focus on individuals and families experiencing housing insecurity, or who may be at risk of homelessness,” said a letter of solicitation from Hale Opio.
” Some of the activities planned include community resource and information tables, family-friendly games and activities, food and refreshments, back-to-school resources and supplies (while supplies last), giveaways and opportunities to connect families with local support programs. Vonn Ramos of Hale Opio said some of the community partners include the County of Kauai, the Hawaii Foodbank Kauai, the Department of Education, Project Vision and more.
